Visual Artist

Aleksander Santo (b. 1987, Uzhhorod, Western Ukraine) is a visual artist whose work moves between portraiture, fashion imagery and conceptual photography. He grew up in a region where the landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains and the legacy of Austro-Hungarian architecture create a distinctive cultural atmosphere at the crossroads of Europe.

From an early age Santo was drawn to the arts — particularly cinema, music and drawing. These early interests shaped his visual sensitivity long before he began working with a camera. Largely self-taught, he spent hours drawing portraits and studying human anatomy through books on classical drawing, developing a fascination with the expressive power of the human face and body.

Photography gradually became a natural continuation of this visual curiosity. Through the camera Santo found a medium that allowed him to unite his interest in image, atmosphere and the emotional presence of the human figure.

Over time his professional practice developed around portrait and fashion photography. Working with models, figures from the entertainment industry and international fashion brands, Santo cultivated a visual language that combines the intensity of portraiture with a refined sensitivity to the body, garment and surrounding space. His work has appeared in international publications including Vogue, L’Officiel and InStyle, and includes collaborations with fashion and beauty brands, among them the designer Iris van Herpen, as well as the creation of a book cover for Penguin Random House.

For more than twenty years Santo has lived and developed his creative practice in Spain. He is currently based in Marbella, while working and traveling across Europe. His projects regularly take him to cities such as Paris and locations throughout Italy, where he continues to collaborate with artists, designers and creative teams within the broader European fashion and visual arts scene.

Alongside his commercial work, Santo maintains a parallel artistic practice that explores more introspective and philosophical dimensions of the image. Influenced by surrealism, conceptual art and contemporary visual culture, his work investigates themes of inner light, transformation and the subtle relationship between the human being and the cosmos.

He is particularly drawn to moments when ordinary perception begins to shift — states of stillness, dreamlike sensations or the quiet experience of déjà vu. Within these images the human body becomes more than a physical form, functioning instead as a vessel for emotion, energy and psychological depth.

Using light, water, textures, distortion and long exposures, Santo constructs images in which the human figure appears fluid and mutable, suspended between physical reality and more intangible dimensions of experience. Through this approach his work seeks to reveal the hidden layers of human presence and evoke the profound inner depth that exists within each individual.

Santo lives in Marbella, Spain, and works internationally across Europe.

Iris van Herpen Collaboration

I collaborated with fashion designer Iris van Herpen on a photographic series inspired by pieces from her Sensory Seas and Aeriform collections. The garments combine intricate craftsmanship with experimental materials and laser-cut structures, creating organic forms that move with the body. Through photography, I explored the relationship between couture, movement, and the transformation of light and form.
